Black Theatre

Black box, the title of the annual exhibition 2008 of the New Saxon Society of Arts in Dresden, gave the first impetus to my experiments with the graphic effects of white on black backgrounds, gold and pigments of black light. Through the mystery of the black box I came to think about black theatre. In the black nothing is visible so that only the special light conjures characters and play. A play as image and symbol of the world, appearance and reality, not particularly earnest and still deadly serious. The golden ball, the magic wand, the hand, masks and wings, elements of the black theatre appear and turn their symbol upside down.

I draw on black paper with white tempera colour. Together with precious gold the scene gains a mythical dimension. Black light changes the scene, it reveals what is hidden and conceals what is visible at day time.
